Structural & Civil Engineering FAQs — Bedfordview & Gauteng

Straight answers on Pr Eng requirements, insurance, compliance, permits and timelines — from the team who will run your project.

Frequently asked questions

01 Do I need a structural engineer for my building project in South Africa?

Most new developments and many alterations require engineer-designed, stamped drawings for municipal approval and safe construction. If your project involves suspended slabs, foundations, structural steel, or a building permit, you'll almost certainly need a registered structural engineer. Contact us with your project details and we'll confirm what's required.

02 What is a Pr Eng, and why does it matter?

Pr Eng stands for Professional Engineer — a designation for engineers registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa who are qualified to take professional responsibility for engineering designs. It matters because a Pr Eng can legally sign off and stamp the drawings your project and permit require. At Edge Engineering, a registered Pr Eng is dedicated to every single project.

03 Are you BBBEE compliant?

Yes. Edge Engineering holds a BBBEE Level 2 rating, which is important for corporate, public-sector and procurement-driven clients who require a compliant professional service provider. We can supply the documentation your procurement team needs.

04 Do you carry Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Yes. We carry R25 000 000 in Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance. This protects you and your project and is a key reason large developers and institutional clients appoint us with confidence.

05 What services does Edge Engineering provide?

We provide structural and civil engineering design and consulting, including post tension design, suspended slabs, surface beds, raft foundations, structural steel detailing, shop drawings and engineer-stamped inspection reports. We work across residential, retail, education, commercial, industrial and mixed-use sectors.

06 Which areas do you work in?

We're based in Bedfordview, Gauteng, and work nationally across South Africa. We also have completed project experience across 12 regions in the broader African region, including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, Lesotho and the DRC.

07 How do you charge for engineering work?

Fees depend on the sector, scale and scope of your project. Every quote is project-specific. Send us your brief by email or phone and we'll give you a clear scope and fee proposal.

08 What software do you use for design?

We use the latest design software, including full 3D modelling in Revit, along with Prokon, Tekla Structural Designer, Robot, AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Advance Steel — giving you accurate, coordinated and buildable designs.

09 Who will actually work on my project?

A registered Professional Engineer is dedicated to every project. Our senior leadership includes Managing Director Jason Bluff (BSc Eng Civil, Pr Eng, 14 years), Executive Director Andani D. Nesane (13 years), Technical Director Frans Pelser (13 years) and Regional Engineering Manager Neo Khabele (6 years). You'll never have a high-value project handed to junior staff without senior oversight.
